Company: Jessica Shepard Photography Name: Jessica Shepard Address: PMB 129, 17675 SW Farmington Road City St Zip: Beaverton, OR 97007 Phone: 503-914-7093 I took a photography class in high school, and instantly fell in love. I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. I continued to college, earning a bachelor's degree in art and photography. From there I did freelance work and pursued personal art projects. A year ago, I finally went full time and officially launched my business. What is your style and why? My style is candid or documentary. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, The photograph itself doesn't interest me. I only want to capture a minute part of reality. I can not say it any better. To me, photography is about telling a story. Whether I am photographing the moments of a wedding day or shooting a portrait, I try to show what is really there, in the raw. Can you tell us about your company? Creativity and professionalism are probably the two biggest things that define my business. I am a bit fanatical about excellent customer service. I want to always exceed my clients expectations. Naturally, I am a little bit of a risk-taker. I use this tendency to push my creative boundaries. I offer wedding photography, engagement sessions, and candid portraits. I also design wedding albums. I offer a variety of types ranging from coffee table to flushmount. I really enjoy this part since it's when I finally get to put the pieces of the story together. What caused you want to get into wedding photography? A friend of a friend was getting married. She was frustrated after meeting with wedding photographers, about not being able to find someone she thought ideal. She was having a smaller laid-back wedding and really wanted to do things her way. At the time I was doing portraits professionally. When I heard about her I decided to ask if she'd like to talk to me about photographing her wedding. She was a bit hesitant but when we got together she was excited for it. What she was asking for was just for someone to not get in her way. While remembering the day was important to her, experiencing it came first. I had always thought of wedding photography as something from 20 or 30 years ago. I remember my high school prom photographer having us say cheese in front of a backdrop and this is what I envisioned before. What I discovered is there is a unique story to every wedding day. I love getting to know each couples' history, and photographing all the little moments (and big ones) of the day. It's neat to know that what I'm creating is something that will be looked back on for years, preserving their memories. Any special or unique packaging or pricing, what price ranges? All of my packages can be customized. I truly listen to my clients needs, and help them build the package that best suits their day. My prices start at $1500 and vary based on individual needs. If you could give a bride any advice to make her day more memorable, from the perspective of a photographer what would it be? Don't be afraid to do it your way. I was interviewing an assistant last week, and she emphasized how important she feels it is for brides to know there are a lot of different ways to get married. It’s your special day, so celebrate it how you want. Once you truly know what you want, take time choosing the professionals you hire. Get to know them, and be sure you trust them. You can ask a million questions and while the answers do matter, the most essential part is that you feel comfortable with each person, whether it be your minister, your coordinator, or your photographer. Why would a bride want to choose you for their wedding? A bride should choose me if my work speaks to them, and they feel comfortable talking to me. My brides typically want to live in the moment of the day, and have the day documented to look back on in the years to come. Do you have any unique or cool products that you offer to brides? I am about to start offering environmentally friendly wedding albums. I have been looking for ways to make my business greener, and just the other day found a company that produces earth friendly albums. These albums are hand-made in the United States, with recycled material, and the entire process is done using windpower for energy. Plus they are incredibly beautiful, and come in several styles. Any awards, memberships, charities you want us to know about? I'm a member of the Wedding Photojournalist Association. I do volunteer work for two non-profits, Goliad Pet Adoption and Northwest Babywearers. How about your funniest wedding shot or story? I was photographing a wedding with two dogs in the wedding party, and two toddlers. In the middle of the ceremony the ring bearer got down on the floor and laid eye to eye with a big black lab. He spent about 5 minutes quietly on the floor with the dog. No one around even seemed to notice, except me. I got an awesome picture of the two with the wedding party in the background. The boy's vest matched the dog's leash, which visually just made it even better. I guess this is more of a sweet moment than funny, but thinking of it makes me smile. |
